The Best Day Trips

Whether you’re looking to relax or explore, you can easily spend an entire day kayaking or paddle boarding on Lake Tahoe. Here are some of our favorite day trip ideas to help you get the most out of your adventure.

  1. North Tahoe Delights

Drop in at North Tahoe Beach or Kings Beach and make your way to the picturesque Carnelian Bay. While you’re there, take some time for family fun at Magic Carpet Mini Golf or enjoy an amazing meal with spectacular views of the lake on the pier at Gar Woods.

  1. Discover the West Shore

On the West Shore of Lake Tahoe there’s a number of great stopping points and sights to see. Take a tour or stroll the grounds of Hellman-Ehrman Mansion, an immense home built in 1903 that’s a gem of Tahoe summer home tradition. For a more vigorous, hike the Eagle Falls Trail, a 2.5 mile trek from Emerald Bay that leads to a stunning waterfall nestled in the forest.

  1. East Shore Adventures

On the East Shore of Lake Tahoe, you can easily set off into the lake from Sand Harbor or Cave Rock. For a quieter retreat, paddle about two miles north from Sand Harbor to Hidden Beach and enjoy a peaceful day soaking up the sun. From Cave Rock, venture south toward Zephyr Cove’s pristine waters, though note that this route is about 3 miles one way, so plan to spend the whole day exploring this rugged shoreline!

Key Tips for a Safe and Fun Experience

As summer heats up, Lake Tahoe becomes a bustling hub of activity. To ensure a safe and enjoyable day on the water, keep these tips in mind:

Stay Close to Shore: With many people out enjoying the lake, it’s important to stay within about 200 feet of the shore. This helps you avoid the busy areas where motorized boats and jet skis create waves.

Check the Weather: Lake Tahoe’s weather can change rapidly. Use the free Windfinder app for up-to-date weather and wind conditions to avoid any surprises.

Prioritize Safety: Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) while kayaking or paddle boarding. Don’t forget to stay hydrated and apply sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun while you’re out on the water.
